Greetings Generals!!!!
Here are the details for the Kick of day!!! If you like and think it will be fun then please come play. Lets give this a try as it is set up below and see how it works out
The Situation:
The Allies have just launched attacks at Cassino and Anzio. Allies are desperately trying to push through the Gustav Line by Crossing the Rapido River. Allies have landed at Anzio with ease but the germans start hitting them hard at the first overpass. Can the allies finaly break through the German Line and Make it to Cassino and Rome? Or will the Axis Hold Their ground and keep the allies pre-occupied on the southern front?
This kick off day is the set up for our campaign but can be played on its own (i.e. you can show up for one or the other or both) because Cassino and Anzio were the first Major Offensives in Italy in 1944 we have put them together in this Event. Anzio and Cassino were also launched just days apart from each other with only about 80 to 90 miles from one city to the other.
This is represented by a Historically Themed Event in a 3 round Tournament Format. There are two table set ups (multiple tables for multiple pairs of players). One Set has the major theme of Anzio: The first Overpass (from Axis of attack: Anzio), the other set has the major theme of Cassino: Rapido River (from axis of attack : Cassino) the terrain on each of the several tables is set up using the terrain generators for the battle. The battle is for a 1900 point list built with guidance about what units and assets were actually available at cassino and anzio. You will bring one list of your force for each battle (described again below). Rounds 1 and 2 will feature additions from the Axis of Attack campaigns for that table, and Round 3 will be an all out free for all: pick the favorite of your two lists for a randomly selected mission.
Down and Dirty Details

Lunch 1:00 to 1:30, Game will start promptly at 1:30
Round 2: 1:30 to 4:00. Mission will be the same as Round one, Players will be reassigned matches and tables. (dependent on the number of players that come).
Round 3: 4:15 to 6:45. ALL BETS ARE OFF! Pick your favorite of the two lists you brought (read below) Players are rematched and reassigned tables, all campaign related restrictions/additions/special rules no longer apply, mission will be randomly selected, Terrain layouts will stay the same, but remember you could play the board from any direction.
Close out: 7:00 to 7:30 Awards and At-a-boys.
Point break: 1900 Points. Players will bring two lists – One list for the Anzio Table and one list for the Cassino Table. You will field the list that applies to the table you play at during round one and then again during round two (example in round one I am at an “anzio, the first overpass table”, then I play my anzio list; during round two at the cassino, rapido river table, I have to play my cassino list. During round three I will get to play my favorite of the two). Lists must be constructed with the following details in mind for each table during rounds 1 and 2 (see description for each table below). Lists can only be built from the Late War Italy books or official PDF’s, or the new forces of war on the BF website. Your list must be emailed to me at easyeightysix@yahoo.com no later than Wednesday January 21st. Can you handle the challenge that the Axis and Allies faced? Will your list have the right punch? Take the challenge!
Books/list options: Your 2 lists (again, that is one for Anzio and one for Cassino) may be built using any current version 3 valid late war publication or official PDF for Italy (e.g. Cassino, dogs and Devils , fortress italy, and road to Rome , one exception is that apparently British commandos were in Italy so overlord can be used to build a British commando list)). The only catch is that your two lists must follow the guidance below for what unit and what equipment was at/was available for the battle that matches the list (One for Anzio and one for Cassino).
Cassino, Rapido River: List guidance and table special rules for rounds 1 and 2 (http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=243)
Allied Forces:
The Allies eventually used a huge variety of forces at Cassino, any one of which could be played in a campaign. Units used included the US 34th, 36th and 85th Infantry Divisions, British 4th, 5th, 46th, 56th and 78th Infantry Divisions, Canadian 5th armoured and 1st Infantry Divisions, Indian 4th and 8th Infantry Divisions, New Zealand 2nd Division, French 1st Motorised, 2nd Moroccan, 3rd Algerian, and 4th Moroccan Divisions and the Polish 3rd Carpathian and 5th Kresowa Infantry Divisions.
Suggested forces include US Rifle, Armoured Rifle, or Armor, a British, Canadian, Polish, Indian (Ghurka), New Zealand (Maori), or Scottish Rifle, Motor Rifle or Tank Company, and a French Tirrailleur, Spahi or Goum force. Either Trained or Veteran of Italy forces may be used.
Allied forces used support weapons typical of the time: Sherman, Churchill, Priest, 25pdr, 105mm artillery, M10s, 6 pounder and 57mm Anti-tank guns. FEC also used M5 light tanks and M3A1 Armoured Cars
Axis Forces:
German defensive units comprised the 15th, 29th and 90th Panzergrenadier, 44th, 71st and 94th Infantry, 5th Mountain and 1st Fallschirmjager Divisions.
Grenadier, Panzer, Motorized Panzer Grenadier, Panzer pioneer or Fallschirmjager companies (no SS) would all be appropriate forces for this campaign.
German forces were mainly infantry and had a limited range of support present: Panzer IV H, StuG III G, Marder, Nebelwerfers, 7.5cm and 10.5cm artillery. No Tigers Panthers or Panzer III were used.
Special rules and Specific Terrain
Air Support
The Allies had overwhelming Air Superiority at Cassino, although bad weather made it difficult to use. The maximum level of air support that may be chosen is as follows:
• Attacker: Priority Air Support
• Defender: Sporadic Air Support
There is no Air Support in games with Mud or Snow.
The points for air will come out of your 1900 point list
Cassino lay at the entrance to the Liri Valley, with Monte Cassino behind. But before the Allies could reach it they had to cross the Rapido River. It is narrow but swift flowing and with steep sides. The Germans have flooded the fields below Cassino, forcing the Allies to approach through the town or mountains to the north.
Terrain: The terrain is flat and marshy; use the Anzio Terrain chart. The Rapido River runs across the board between the Attackers and Defenders deployment zones. A road (Route Six) runs from the Allied table edge to the German table edge, and crosses the river at a bridge. The Rapido is very difficult for infantry and vehicles must cross at a bridge. Large buildings are located in the defender’s deployment zone – the railway station on the Cassino axis and a barracks on the Massif Axis. Other terrain on the board will be determined using the random terrain generators on the web page.
Mission Suggestions: No Retreat, Hold the line
Engineering Support: Fifth Army concentrated engineering resources to help with the difficult crossing. Any Allied force playing a mission on the Rapido River battlefield may add a full strength Engineer or Pioneer platoon of their nationality. Armour or Armoured infantry Companies may add an Armoured Engineer Platoon. This is in addition to your 1900 point force. CLARIFICATION on engineering support for Anzio: This is essentially free points. You get the unit in addition to your 1900 points because of the extra empahsis put on engineers in order to cross the river. Make sure to bring your extra engineers with you.
Anzio, The First Overpass: List guidance and special rules for rounds 1 and 2 (http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=3651)
Allies
The initial attacks on the Factory were conducted by the British 1st Division, but heavy fighting quickly drew in elements of 56th Division, the 46th Royal Tank Regiment and the US 45th Infantry Division. By the end of the March battles, the US 1st Armored Division, and 3rd Infantry Division (with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment fighting under command as groundpounders), Darby’s Rangers, the First Special ServicesForce, and the British 2nd Special Service Brigade (a Commando unit) were also drawn into the fighting. To represent these forces field companies from Dogs & Devils, Cassino, or any of the Italy appropriate PDF Intelligence Briefings. Companies not available from these books, such as Commandos, can taken from Turning Tide.
Axis
The first German troops to Anzio were 3. Panzergrenadierdivision, 65. Grenadierdivision and 715. Grenadierdivision. Within a month the Germans had added Panzergrenadierdivision Hermann Göring, 26. Panzerdivision, 29. Panzergrenadierdivision, 114. Jägerdivision, and 4. Fallschirmjägerdivision (including elements of the Italian Nembo parachute division) to their order of battle. These were supported by a full array of secret weapons including Panther and Tiger heavy tanks, Elefant heavy assault guns, Brummbär assault guns, and radio-controlled demolition tanks. To represent these forces field companies from Dogs & Devils, Cassino, or any of the Italy appropriate PDF Intelligence Briefings.
The First Overpass
The overpass is a well made concrete structure that carries the road which runs to Padigleone across the Via Anziate and the adjacent railway line from Campoleone. The first overpass marks the final defensive line for the Allied Beachhead. If the Axis forces penetrate the perimeter here, all will be lost for the Allies.
Terrain
In the open countryside the overpass offers some cover to the defenders and so forms a focal point of any defence. The long straight Via Anziate road runs from one end of the table to the other, with the Anzio railway line running parallel with it. At one the Allied end of the table another road runs across the table. Where it meets the Via Anziate a long ramp leads up to an overpass flying over both the road and railway before sloping down the other side. Other terrain on the board will be determined using the random terrain generators in the PDF
Naval Gunfire Support
Allied forces fighting at the First Overpass benefit from Naval Gunfire Support from the USS Brooklyn. The guns of the USS Brooklyn, lying off Anzio, provide fire support for any Allied forces fighting close to the sea. One broadside from the Brooklyn is as powerful as a salvo from any heavy artillery battalion. However, Luftwaffe air strikes using new Henschel HS-293 guided missiles sometimes force the navy to withdraw, leaving the army unsupported.
At the start of each turn while rolling for air support, the Allied player rolls another die. On a roll of 5+, the USS Brooklyn is available to give this sector naval gun fire support for this turn.
When the USS Brooklyn is available, the Company Command team (but only the Company Command team) may spot for an Artillery Bombardment from the USS Brooklyn equivalent to a 6-gun battery with an Anti-tank rating of 5 and a Firepower Rating of 1+. The USS Brooklyn has sufficient range to hit any target on the table. The ship is not on the table and may not be attacked.
THIS IS OPEN TO OFFLINE DISCUSSION FOR REVISION IN FUTURE EVENTS. LETS TRY AND RUN THIS AS IT IS WRITTEN.
