Greetings Generals, There will be a Battle of Kursk event on Sunday, July 24th at Black Moon Games in West Leb. We will be meeting at 11 AM when the stores opens to set up the tables, and commence to gaming at 12 noon. This will be a large scale Mid War event for the fun of it, and all are welcome to attend. As of now, this will be a similar build to Tanksgiving, with some extra flavor added in for that good ole Kursk feeling. This particular event will focus more on tank combat, than on other aspects of the historic battle. I know there were very large swaths of infantry, artillery, AT guns, trenches, AA guns and so much more on both sides that contributed to the battle. However, that will be hard to replicate for a one day event.
Each player will have 2000 points to build their forces. All lists will be built from the Eastern Front book only.
Players forces will consist of tank lists only. If you want to play, and don't have a horde of Soviet or German armor, you are more than welcome to proxy pieces. Nationalities will be restricted to the Soviet Union forces and German forces only. In addition to your regular list that you build, each side will be granted one artillery battery, and one Priority Air Support. This is to represent the colossal amount of artillery and combat aircraft that were present on both sides of the battle.
Now, as for victory conditions, I am still drawing up the specifics on that portion of the game. There will be a set of objectives on both sides of the map that each side will be vying for. I am working on basing these off of, and to represent historic portions of the actual battle. I will add these soon to this thread, but I wanted to get the initial information of the game posted.
Thank you for your interest. Please post any questions below, and I hope to see you all on the Eastern Front.
-Jeff

Jeff I regret to say that I am unwilling to play the Kursk game. three or so years ago we played a MW tanksgiving game at 2000 points all tanks. The Russian's had lots of KV-85s the german companies were mostly a mix of Panthers, with one Ferdinand, one tiger and some other tanks. The result was two German companies lost their tiger and a few other tanks non Panthers tanks. The Germans were able to sit off with their high AT tanks and as Veteran status and destroy the Russians, the Russian's could do little their best AT gun is 12(KV-85), their best armor is 9. At long range they are lucky to hit at 5, unable to damage tigers or better, unless the German rolls an armor save at 1or 2. Tank for tank the German Army is better than any other army in MW. I see little point playing to prove that, I am regret having to say that .

A T-34 horde has Fast tank abilities. They can swarm panthers with this move. Will I have played Russians in flames of war for 4 5 years in that time time I have used a fast move with T-34s... once. A fast move is just a double move that allows you to move 32" and not 24" further you have to be stay more than 8" from the the enemy. say I use a fast move to swarm 3 Panthers unless I can find a place where I will be out of the line sight of them they will get 12 shots me, at best I will be trained, and unless the German is unlucky he should get at least 8 hits with an AT14 that's is 8 bailed or destroyed tanks. I fooled around with lists there's no way to get enough T-34s, in MW even with Conscripts I can't get more than 21 T-34s. Further he can just move away if he wishs. If you go on the FOW forum and ask about a fast move people will tell you its the most worthless special movement in the game . Oh yes I don't see the need to play Tanksgiving more than once a year.

This is not a Tansgiving event, I simply borrowed some of the format of that event for list building only. I am trying to create a separate and fun filled Flames of War day that I have not seen before, which I outlined in my initial post. You have already explained your reasons for not attending, we need no further detail.
Thank you.

When the dust settled today. The Russians pulled off a great victory today. Joe and I had 4000 points of Russians against Jeff's 4000 points of Germans. A great day of fun at Blackmoon Games.
Temis lengthy complaining is debunked. Russians can win this game. A great event Jeff. Thanks for running it, despite Temis bitching and moaning about the game. Temis has a long track history of complaining about everything Flames of War. If it was on the FOW website. It most be true. Hogwash......

Air support and arty helped the Germans significantly, but depsite Hen and Chicks and failed fire powers the Germans could not remount their Mark IVs and stave off the conscript horde. Once the Guards forced the center to quite the field the flank also retreated. The toll was too high once a Ferdinand was shot in the flank from long range, and the Krauts decided to call off the offense and lost initiative in the east. From now on the Germans are going to fight a defensive war. Field Marshall Von Mayo has been recalled to Berlin for being accused of defeatism and not getting authorization to retreat from OKH command.

Allot of Factors were needed to score a kill on the Ferdinand from my KV 85. Jeff failed a Stormtrooper move with a roll of 1. Then I needed a 6 to hit him on the flank. I rolled a six with my Japanese dice. Jeff then failed armor save. Then I rolled another six for the firepower to kill. It was a bunch of luck on my part. Jeff was rushing reinforcements to his center line when my 4 KV-85s broke his Panzer four platoon holding his center. My second platoon of 3 Kv -85's and a platoon of SU-152 had his platoon of Panzers fours holding his left flank down to two tanks. A KV-85 survived a direct hit at long range from the Ferdinand in the opening round. The Guards Heavy tank regiment suffered no destroyed tanks in the battle.

The Russians won the day, with the Germans and their very handsome commander retreating to the West to prepare defenses against the red menace. While lucky rolls were had by 1/2 of Russian command, while the other half and the German commander faired poorly in the good dice rolls department. With an endless supply of American supplied Sherman's in the Russian rank and file, the German center crumbled under the armored onslaught and they quit the field.

Jeff killed many Shermans but there was so much more rushing him. Jeff had two Big Cats surrounded by AAA and a horde of Panzer fours protecting the Big Cats. Joe and I were thinking we were going to lose this battle because Jeff had the two Big Cats and no Panthers. I was expecting panthers to take the field. I think we have room to improve the Battle of Kursk in the future.
